The autumn winter capsule wardrobe

The leaves are turning shades of red, orange, yellows and vintage greens. The air is feeling just a little bit crisper than it did in the weeks just gone. The sun is setting earlier each evening and rising later each morning. Autumn is truly upon us. This is the season that I feel like I wait for all year long as it is my favourite time of year and truly brings me so much joy. There are so many things to look forward to and just to name a few, I’m talking abut scarves, simple layering, cable knits, gloves, ankle boots! Yes, the greatest things about autumn and winter, am I right?

I really enjoy thinking about layering up this time of year, a good coat, a fantastic autumnal array of wool jumpers and a staple of pair of waterproof boots is my equivalent to sitting by a cosy fire with a hot cup of chocolate. Its cosy vibes all over. It is ever so easy for me to get carried away with shopping for this season and in the past, if I’m not very careful and very strict with myself, I can easily end up with an entire wardrobe fully of cashmere and wool jumpers taking over my entire wardrobe space! Over the years, I have gotten better at purchasing my staple pieces for a capsule autumn and winter wardrobe and have been better at picking timeless pieces that will most certainly get lots of wear out of them for a good few years to come.

I thought I’d share with you what I will be wearing this autumn and how I will be wearing it and also act as the voice of reason on how to purchase items to help you create your own personal capsule wardrobe that will see you through the months to come.

Inside my capsule wardrobe

My capsule wardrobe hero’s for Autumn and Winter  contain a mix of knitted jumpers in various styles and in my staple colour palette which is black, beige, and earthy tones. I also have built a good balance of knitted dresses, trousers made from various fabrics and boots. My go to for shoes all the way through to late Spring will always be a pair of croc effect knee high boots which I had bought from NA-KD a few years back. They have lasted me all this time and have made for a versatile day to night, sophisticated but practical and stylish boot for the colder months.

How to build your own Autumn Winter capsule wardrobe

When choosing trousers or skirts, choose items made from an array of fabrics instead of just one type of fabric. This will help with versatility with styling your outfits and also help you add more dimension to your looks. Long silk skirts or dresses are great because these days they come in so many different colours and lengths which means you can really play around with your silhouette and also play around with how you choose to build your outfits. When choosing trousers, look for something that can easily be transitioned from day wear to nightwear. Wide legged thick knitted trousers could be paired with a cable knit jumper for the day and a lace blouse and tailored blazer for the night.

I always find shoes the thickest part of sliding my autumn winter wardrobe and I think it’s because the weather is so temperamental where I live. That being said, I know what to look for and I know what will get the most wear throughout the season. A good knee high boot and a good ankle boot. When you are choosing an ankle boot, go for a heel different to the heel of your knee high boot as this will feel more like a second option and less like a repetitive buy. Also ensure that they are in a style that works well with the outfits that you already have in your wardrobe.

Having a couple of cashmere, polo neck, cable knit and crew neck ribbed jumpers will always go a long way. Jumpers of course can be used as something that you throw over your shoulders in Spring and Summer so opt for colours that will see you through the year rather than just the season. In my wardrobe I have a few heritage green, beige and black jumpers and they all work well with the types of outfits I like to wear through out the year too.

Think about unifying your wardrobe by repeating your colour pallet and adding in more classic tones as a pop of colour. You can mix things up with your accessories but make sure to purchase items that can collaborate with each other when you are building outfits.
